Top Tips for Your Houseplants in the Fall

Top Tips for Your Houseplants in the Fall

The concept of the Tiny Treehouse was born during the covid lockdowns.  Like many of us, Lars Wijers, creator, designer and founder of Tiny Treehouses, spent much of his time at home tending to his houseplant passion, which is where the idea to create Tiny Treehouses that could nestle in the pot plants came about.

Tiny Treehouses are to pot plants what bird houses are to trees. Without the support of the pot plant they are homeless. So caring for your plants is simply a part of the ritual of the Tiny Treehouse passion.

Here Lars shares some of his favourite plan types for the autumn season in your home, along with tips for maintaining, pruning and caring for them in preparation for winter.

Best Indoor Plants for Cozy Autumn Vibes

The best thing about all the plants listed below is that they will last season upon season in your home and require very little maintenance and high care, which makes them particularly hardy during the autumn and winter months.

Whilst some of our Tiny Treehouses have been designed to fit within the branches of the plants and come with a selection of hanging solutions for you to choose from, many also come with stakes to enable you to insert them into the soil at base of the plant. The Horizon’s Edge model is unique in that is has been designed to fit on the edge of the plant pot itself, which looks perfect with the more structural Sansevieria and ZZ Plants mentions below

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

  • A hard-wearing plant that creates a calming vertical element to your room, Sansevieria are perfect autumn plants because they continue to thrive in low light and cooler temperatures.

TIPS FOR HOUSE PLANT DISPLAY AREAS

Keeping It Safe from Water Damage

All our treehouses come with an Acrylic Stake option so they can sit in the plant pot at the base of your plant. This ensures the wood does not come into contact with the soil.

Ideally if you are doing a drenching watering session, remove the Tiny Treehouse, but if this is not necessary, then don’t worry If you accidentally splash a treehouse when watering your plant - gently shake the excess water off and let it air dry or move it to a sunny spot by the window.

That said, any drenching or soaking in water will permanently damage the structure and integrity of your treehouse, so never leave your plant and Treehouse out in the rain, or allow the Treehouse to become soaked in water.

Should you live in a low-rainfall region and want to use your Treehouse outdoors, even if this is a covered outdoor area, we recommend weatherproofing your Tiny Treehouse.  For more information See our How-To Weatherproofing Guide here.

            Light it up!

Every Treehouse comes with battery operated LED lights (requiring 2 x CR2032 batteries which are not included due to international shipping requirements) however, we also sell an easy to use USB cabled LED light which you can purchase as an add on.

            Planning

When planning to integrate a Tiny Treehouse, or if you are repotting your plants, be sure to position the plant to the side of the pot, not in the middle, to leave some room for your treehouse to full nestle within you tableau.

TOP TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR HOUSE PLANTS IN THE FALL

            1. Adjust Watering Frequency - As days get cooler, plants require less water. Overwatering is common in the fall and can cause root-rot, so check the soil before watering to avoid soggy roots.
            2. Maximise Natural Light - With shorter days, move your plants closer to windows to capture as much natural light as possible. Rotating plants is also great practice to ensure even sunlight exposure on all sides.
            3. Boost Humidity - Indoor heating can dry out the air, which can stress plants. Use a spray bottle for misting your plants instead of watering or you could place a humidifier near your plants. A clever low-maintenance option is to create a pebble tray below your pot plan using a simple watertight tray filled with pebbles and water. This will create evaporation in the room add moisture to the air, improving and maintaining the humidity levels for your plants.
            4. Inspect for Pests - As you start heating your home, pests like spider mites can thrive. Regularly check your plants for any signs of pests and treat them immediately. Neem Oil is a highly recommended spray for houseplants that is organic, pesticide free and safe for family and pets.
            5. Prune and Clean - Remove dead or yellowing leaves to keep your plants looking fresh. Pruning helps promote new growth and a clean plant absorbs more sunlight, keeping it healthy throughout the season.

HERE'S A MUST-HAVE LIST OF ACCESSORIES LARS RECOMMENDS FOR CARING FOR YOUR HOUSEPLANTS

            Microfiber Gloves

These gloves are for all seasons. With windows closed more in Fall and Winter, dust collects quickly on houseplant leaves. This can prevent them getting the precious bit of light they need for photosynthesis and growth, so these gloves are a fun, quick and gentle way to dust your plants.

            Spray Misting Bottles
